Meaning of the Hamsa Hand (Chamsa,
Khamsa, Eye in Hand)
Also known as the Hand of Fatima,
Hand of Miriam and the Hamesh Hand, the Hamsa Hand is an old and popular amulet
for magical protection from the Evil Eye. The word HAMSA means five and refers
to the digits on the hands. Amulets of the Hamsa Hand appear in both two-thumbed
and the natural one-thumb form. Because the Hamsa or Hamesh Hand protects
against the Evil Eye, the design in some examples merges into another design
called the Eye in Hand motif. In those instances, a realistic or stylized eye
appears in the center of the palm of the hand. Among Jews, fish are considered
to be a symbol of good luck, so many Hamsas are also decorated with fish images.
